A Letter to Past Me For Next Time

Hey there, it’s me!

(I told you I’d write!)

I hope you weren’t waiting up every night

Staring out blankly into the abyss

Searching for words that you’d hate to miss.

I hope you weren’t idle and sat, holding back.

I hope you weren’t anxious about all that you lack.

I hope you were steadfast and held tight to you.

But I know none of that resulted as true.

I know you were hesitant waiting for fate...

Working a slave’s life and learning to hate.

I know you were confused, mislabeling Love;

Giving too much, never getting enough.

I know you were shallow, succumbing to sin,

Embracing your ego, and nurturing djinn.

I know you were hurting, drowning in pain,

Self-medicating, trying to stay sane.

I know you did nothing you could for yourself—

Propping up others and gaining no wealth

I know you did everything you thought you should

To avoid being so misunderstood.

I know that you failed, crashed, burst into flames,

And burned alive slowly in seasons sans rains.

And yet, here we are. Together again.

Over two decades later, and so…what’s the plan?

Some six thousand days have now gone by

Since you decided that new life should die.

You can either stay sorry or learn to forgive —

Only one is conducive to let yourself live

A life not bogged or wrought with wrath

Now is the time to choose a new path.

The road less traveled was still but a trap;

You also know that the game is all whack.

So, now, more than ever have you learned to see

The only way to succeed is to embrace “Let it be”?

Break yourself free from the shackles of ghosts,

And simply keep focus on who matters most.

The world is in need of heroes with stealth

That can only be gained by worrying about yourself.

With Love,

Me
